Surrogates - the movie

Plot Summary for Surrogates

People are living their lives remotely from the safety of their own homes via robotic surrogates -- sexy, physically perfect mechanical representations of themselves. It's an ideal world where crime, pain, fear and consequences don't exist. When the first murder in years jolts this utopia, FBI agent Greer discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon and must abandon his own surrogate, risking his life to unravel the mystery.

I saw this movie last night. The first thing that took me by surprise is that movie lasts only an hour and a half - really it's short compared to the others in this modern time. I liked the movie but didn't love it and in the end its length was enough to tell the story. I enjoy watching Sci-Fi, but this one felt like it was more about special effects then the story itself. But it did get me thinking - do I spend more time with my virtual friends then with the one I can meet every day? Don't get me wrong I think blogging, chatting and facebooking (is that a word?) is great thing. I wouldn't have an opportunity to meet and chat with all of you if all of this modern technology didn't exist and I'm happy I was privileged to know each and every one of you. But where is the balance? Is it when you start living your life in your bedroom dressed in your pj’s and 'talk' with only your cyber friends (for many of them you aren't even sure how they look like) - like these future people with surrogates do? When do you cross this fine line? Sure, we don't have our robots that we send to work every day instead of us, but we do have avatars, nicknames, etc. But what is the real difference, here? Many people choose to work from the house, it has become the trend. But how does this affect our social life? Have we become alienated from each other?

So I encourage you to walk among the real people, today. Just meet with your friends and have a real chat with a real coffee or tea steaming on the desk between you :)

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

  1. I have kept my eye on this movie. Waiting to see if Hubby will want to go see it or wait for it on dvd. I am a Bruce Wills fan... So, we will see.
But wow, what a powerful post today honey! You are right... Where is the balance? Is there a line? Have we let cyber world take over?
Well, interacting with people on a daily basis is a must for my job. Then home life is a must. Although I sometimes wonder why they call me Mom and Wife?? But for the majority, I can not recall the last person I physically met that shared my interests in life, books, family, fellowship... So, for me, my online friends are very dear to me. The ones that I take time to get to know...
    Yea you silly!!!
Thank you for the eye opening post!
Hope you have a great day honey!
